NOTICES

Medical Assistance Program; Prior Authorization

[29 Pa.B. 5958]

The purpose of this notice is to provide an additional item to the Medical Assistance Program's list of items and services requiring prior authorization.

Section 443.6(b)(7) of the Public Welfare Code (62 P. S. § 443.6(b)(7)) authorizes the Department of Public Welfare to add items and services to its list of services requiring prior authorization by publication of notice in the Pennsylvania Bulletin.

In addition to the items and services listed in section 443.6(b)(1)--(6) of the Public Welfare Code, effective December 1, 1999, the Medical Assistance Program will begin to require prior authorization for any prescription drug product indicated for the treatment of Erectile Dysfunction in men.

Fiscal Impact

Since the Medical Assistance Program must provide coverage for all outpatient drug products from drug companies that participate in the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program, as provided in section 1927 of the Social Security Act, no future fiscal impact is anticipated as a result of this amendment.
