Election for the Office of Judge of The Superior Court of Pennsylvania

[Saturday, July 11, 2009]On June 15, 2009, the Secretary of the Commonwealth received written notice that Judge Maureen Lally-Green has revoked her declaration of candidacy for retention as a Judge of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Under the Constitution and laws of the Commonwealth, an election for the judicial office held by Judge Lally-Green will occur as part of the Municipal Election to be held November 3, 2009.
In the Municipal Election, the electors of the Commonwealth will elect four Judges of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania. Each elector will be entitled to vote for up to four candidates, with the four candidates receiving the largest number of valid votes being elected.
In the Municipal Primary held May 19, 2009, the electors of the Democratic Party and the Republican Party each nominated three candidates for the office of Judge of the Superior Court. By law, each of the certified Statewide political parties of the Commonwealth--the Democratic Party, the Republican Party and the Libertarian Party--will be permitted to nominate one additional candidate for Superior Court by submitting to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, no later than September 14, 2009, a nomination certificate in the form prescribed by law and prepared in accordance with the applicable rules of the political party. See 25 P. S. §§ 2938.3, 2953 and 2954 (relating to vacancy due to revocation of declaration of candidacy for retention; filling of certain vacancies in public office by means of nomination certificates and nomination papers; and number, form and requirements of nomination certificates to fill certain vacancies). Political bodies will be permitted to nominate a candidate by filing with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, no later than September 14, 2009, nomination papers prepared and submitted in accordance with the requirements of the Pennsylvania Election Code. See id.
