Head Injury Program
[49 Pa.B. 423]
[Saturday, January 26, 2019]The Head Injury Program (HIP), administered in the Bureau of Family Health (BFH), through the Emergency Medical Services Act of 1985 (35 Pa.C.S. §§ 8101—8157), funds short-term intensive brain injury rehabilitation for residents in this Commonwealth who have sustained a traumatic brain injury. See 35 Pa.C.S. § 8153(d). The BFH's regulations establish requirements for those who are eligible for those services. See 28 Pa. Code § 4.6 (relating to assessment).
To provide these services, the HIP contracts with specialized brain injury providers who offer therapies such as physical, occupational, speech and cognitive therapies along with assistive community integration and psychological services. Rehabilitation services can be received in a residential setting as outpatient services or as home-based and community-based services depending on the need of the individual.
Effective immediately, the Department of Health will now be accepting applications to the HIP for individuals 18 years of age and older. To obtain an application contact the HIP at (717) 772-2763 or the Brain Injury Helpline at (866) 412-4755, or for speech and/or hearing-impaired persons, call the Pennsylvania AT&T Relay Service at (800) 654-5984 (TDD users) or (800) 654-5988 (voice users).
