Application of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital for Exception

   Under 28 Pa. Code § 51.33 (relating to requests for exceptions), the Department of Health (Department) hereby gives notice that The Western Pennsylvania Hospital has requested an exception to the requirements of 28 Pa. Code § 153.1 (relating to minimum standards), which requires compliance with minimum standards contained in the following publication: Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Healthcare Facilities. The facility specifically requests exemption from the following standard contained in this publication: 10.15.A2, which states that minimum room areas exclusive of toilet rooms, closets, lockers, wardrobes, alcoves or vestibules shall be 140 square feet (13.01 square meters) in single bedrooms and 125 square feet (11.61 square meters) per bed in multi-bed rooms. In multi-bed rooms, a clearance of 3 feet 8 inches (1.12 meters) shall be maintained at the foot of each bed to permit the passage of equipment and beds.

   The request is on file with the Department.    Those persons who wish to comment on an exception request may do so by sending a letter by mail, e-mail or facsimile to the division and address previously listed.

   As this request has been made on an emergency basis, under 28 Pa. Code § 51.33(c), the Department is not including a public comment period.
